Mary Atherton

Lady Cornwallis was born Lady Mary Ainsley in 1788. She is the eldest daughter of an Earl and elder sister of Lady Sarah Ainsley and Lady Susan Ainsley. She made her debut in 1805 and became a wallflower due to her excessive shyness and her height. She found herself in the shadow of Lady Viola Fitzgerald and Miss Dancy. However, in her second season she met and subsequently married the middle aged Gilbert Atherton, Baron Cornwallis. Their marriage is successful and they have one daughter so far, Jane (1807).
