James MacAlistair was born in Glasgow in 1748 to middle class parents. He went into the textile business, amassed a large fortune importing cotton from India and was knighted for his efforts in 1788. He married social climbing widow Mrs. Sarah Manning in 1781 with whom he had three daughters: Augusta and twins Belinda and Selina. The family moved from Scotland in 1791 when Sir James retired from business. He bought a small estate near Bath to allow his daughters to grow up well provided for and able to enjoy the Bath seasons.
Sir James and Lady MacAlistair still live at MacAlistair House.
