Background

Clarence is a second son who has been an oldest son his entire life. Edward, Jr., the older brother who died as a toddler, has been a significant part of his life since he learned of his existence as a young boy, and he has alternated between a fondness for him and a sense of competition.

Clarence attended only the best public schools and university. He is, in addition to his current title, the heir to Madeley, by virtue of his uncle, its current Viscount, producing only daughters. Family pressure to marry one of those daughters only strengthened his resolve to avoid them. However, hope began to re-emerge for the unfortunate young ladies when season after season went by with Clarence still, surprisingly, single.

It was with great relief that Clarence spotted a handsome young lady who could answer him quip for quip, and question for answer, and who consented to marry him before the season was out. He is quite happy with his choice.
