Background
On the 2nd of April, 1791 the Countess of Edgeworth was brought to bed of a healthy baby boy. The child was as sunny as the day of his birth had been, and as the heir to an earldom, a much loved first son. Growing up with a large brood of younger siblings, he never lacked for company as a lad, and his childhood was filled with boisterous games and laughter.
Receiving private instruction from a tutor till the age of thirteen (whom he shared with his brothers Evelyn, Claud and Eustace and his competitive and thoroughly unladylike younger sister Cassandra) he was packed off to Eton at the age of thirteen. There he remained till his eighteenth year, after which he proceeded to Cambridge, where he read Classics as men of his class were expected to do. He did not distinguish himself in any particular way in his scholarly pursuits, but he did succeed in becoming an enthusiastic cricketer and a capable amateur pugilist in that time.
At Cambridge, his affable disposition attracted many friends, not all of them savoury, and his time at university was marked by occasional forays into drinking, gambling, and sometimes even wenching, (although it must be admitted that this was rarely a notable success.) Things did not change substantially following his graduation and his subsequent move to London. Experiences gleaned from nights out with more worldly-wise friends have left Tristan believing he is quite the man about town. In truth, he is still naïve and rather inexperienced compared to many of his peers, easily shocked by some of their wilder adventures, but eager nevertheless to have his share in them, not because he particularly enjoys them for their own sake but rather for the camaraderie which they bring.
An inherently principled mind will allow him to go only so far in his exploits, but he is still quite easily led by stronger-willed companions. While not lacking completely in the steel required to resist them, Tristan has yet to develop it completely – a lesson that will no doubt be learnt the hard way – through experience.
