History
The current creation of the Earldom of Essex was sold to Edmund Sterne, in 1616, as a means of income for James I. The Barony of Sterne dates back to ?, when it was rewarded by ? to ? Styrne. The ancient seat of the Barons Sterne is Sterne Castle.
