James Harcourt is the third child and only son of Richard and Elizabeth Harcourt, and the younger brother of Amelia Harcourt. An unexpected child born after a series of miscarriages and a stillbirth, James was doted on by all his family. When his parents tragically passed in 1806, he came under the care of his older sister. Amelia refused to take James way from their childhood home, Avonleigh Hall in Hertfordshire, and so their mother's cousin Iris Whitworth came instead to reside with them.
James is devoted to Amelia, who has been both sister and parent to him since he was seven, and views Iris as something of an aunt or guardian. He is generally a kind, thoughtful boy, though prone to the mischief all twelve-year-old boys will get into. He has recently started school at Eton and is excited to be among boys his own age.
