The Barony of Ackland is a hereditary title in the Peerage of England. The first holder of the title was Thomas De Gart.
History
Thomas de Gart was created Baron Ackland in 1299 by Edward I for "Valour and Honour" during the Battle of Falkirk. The de Gart family flourished and prospered and were, for many years, an important landed family in Surrey. Their line continued unbroken for over four hundred years, until, in 1708, the last de Gart died without issue. The title then passed to a cousin, whose family had long ago taken the more English surname of Gardiner. Unfortunately, the Gardiner branch of the family was unused to wealth and land. In the course of a century, bad investments and spendthrift habits undid almost 400 years of work. Nearly all the land had been sold, and certainly the houses in London, Bath, and Edinburgh were gone. Were it not for the fortuitous marriage between the current baron to the daughter of a wealthy baronet, the family likely would have been bankrupt. Now, however, things seem to be on the mend. The current baron is the 17th Baron Ackland (Baron of England).
