Born in 1780 to a servant class family in Birmingham, Sweete served as a footman and eventually a valet at several households before being employed as a personal valet to Edmund Mayoh in 1802. The relationship of the valet and his master is an extraordinary one and could be indeed described as a real friendship. Among other things, the two of them share an affinity for adventure. Despite being loyal to Lord Wembury and being on very friendly terms with him, Sweete dislikes the very nature of servitude, being an avid reader of egalitarian books and pamphlets.
