Background

Upbringing

Isabella was born in poverty in London after her father, Aeneas Granville, was disinherited for his marriage to the housemaid, Peggy Mason. Three years after her birth, her father died in ill health leaving Peggy and little Isabella destitute. Peggy was forced into prostitution to support Isabella and became ill herself. Only, when Tarquin Granville died did Aeneas' parents make an effort to discover their daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Peggy did not survive the removal to Granville Park long.

Sir Maximus took Isabella in and from that day brought her up in a fitting way for the only direct Granville descendant surviving. Despite giving her all material comforts and eventually settling a large dowry on her, her grandparents were not warm towards her and could never quite disguise their prejudice against the colour of her skin. They kept her quietly, removed from society.

Only now, towards the end of the season, are they bringing her to London in a rather half-hearted attempt to marry her off, probably to some younger son from a good but impoverished family - in other words, somebody desperate enough to take her.

Isabella's Writing

Isabella has been a keen amateur author since the age of thirteen. She has written several pieces of fanfiction based on her favourite novels and is currently planning an original work.

Fanfiction

  • The True & Most Tragical History of Caroline Evelyn (1806) - inspired by Fanny Burney's Evelina about the heroine's mother. Complete but very immature.
  • Maria, or The Justification of Freindship (1807) - inspired by Fanny Burney's Evelina; a sequel about Maria Mirvan. Incomplete and very sentimental.
  • The Mysterious Chateau (1808) - inspired by Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho; a sequel pairing up Lady Blanche and Count Morano. Complete, ridiculous, and actually quite impressive.
  • Annette's Story (1809) - inspired by Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho; a retelling of the story from Annette's point of view. Incomplete and uninspired with a few touches of humour.
  • Mrs. Vincent, or What Should Have Happened (1810) - inspired by Maria Edgeworth's Belinda; an alternate ending and continuation in which Belinda marries Mr. Vincent instead of Mr. Hervey. So far incomplete.

And various short stories - missing scenes and character studies.
