Sir Maximus is a cool-headed businessman who's single aim in life is to increase his self-consequence and wealth and to boost the Granville name and fortunes. While he is publicly decent, he has a bullying temperament which comes across as jocular within male society. Towards women, he is dismissive. He took in his granddaughter, [[Isabella Granville|Isabella]] from a sense of duty but finds her rather an embarrassment. Only a desire that perhaps someone might be bribed into marrying her and therefore getting her off his hands has led him to bringing her to London.
