Edward Clare (1760-1810) is the son of Thomas and Lady Julia Clare (nee Moncrieff). The Clares are a wealthy gentry family with an estate, Shotley Park near Bristol. Mr. Clare's income was £8,000 p.a.
Edward married Miss Catherine Bentley in 1793; they had one daughter, Eleanor, before Mrs. Clare died. In 1805 Edward remarried Miss Selina MacAlistair. They had no issue and Edward died in 1810.
Since there was no male offspring, the Clare estate and the guardianship of Miss Clare fell to the nearest male relative, cousin Oscar Moncrieff, Marquess of Avening.
