Theresa is the second daughter of Sir Silvanus Ruthyn. She is married to Ernest Arrington, the Earl of Gloucester, and she has a daughter, Laura, by Thomas Sterne. Therese and Thomas met in 1803, when the latter was attending the University of Oxford, and since then they have been in an on and off relationship, the climax of which was when they decided to elope but resolved not to before boarding a ship to Calais.

Theresa is a free-spirited woman with a taste in the unconventional and sometimes deviant pleasures of life. She is very affectionate towards the persons she cares for, though she may seem quite the opposite at times, especially when she feels confined by responsibility or commitment.
