Dr Thornton was engaged in 1802 by Lord Saltash as private tutor for his son Robert during Mr Vickery's Grand Tour, which came to an abrupt end in 1803 when hostilities with France were resumed. It was thanks to Mr Vickery's fluency in German that the pair made it safely to the Hanoverian coast at Bremerhaven and were able to get a ship back to England. It was in recognition of Dr Thornton's services that Lord Saltash was able to procure him a place as master at Winchester School, where both his Lordship's sons had been scholars.
