Panton is the Comtesse d'Aubin's lady's maid. She also sometimes helps out with Lunete d'Aubin on whom she has had a secret crush for several years. Claudine conceals her tragic love by gossiping incessantly about the male servants and passing on dirty tidbits of information, often wholly inaccurate, to her young mistress. She is friends with Lunete's maid, Florette Mercier, but is keen to keep her true feelings secret from her.
