Mrs. Clare was born Miss Catherine Bentley, only daughter of Sir Roland Bentley of Clifton Hall in Kent, not far from Jubilee Court, seat of the Marquessate of Emerson.
She never had a London season and met Mr. Clare when he was visiting friends in the area in 1792. They were married several months later. It was a very happy marriage. Edward and Catherine had one daughter, Eleanor. Catherine died during complications in the birth of her son in 1799. The baby died a mere week later. The two deaths left husband, daughter and her parents devastated.
