Background

Landon entered this world in the home of his ancestors, Pickering House, and no more than twelve hours later his mother left this world due to complications of labor. As a result the two boys, Landon and Sebastian (two years Landon’s senior) grew up without the guidance and loving care of a mother.

Their father growing up wanted nothing to do with Landon. At the time Landon thought that it had something to do with the way his mother perished (later he found out that it was simply because his father had more important things to think about… namely women.) (His father had a reputation as a louse and womanizer and though nothing was ever proved between the rumors and his rare but violent bursts of temper the Weatherbie name had nearly become mud before the boys came in to clean it up.) However, his father was extremely protective of Sebastian, the heir to the land and fortune.

One might think that this would drive the two boys apart, but the two grew up practically inseparable. They both enjoyed similar activities, went to the same schools where they both excelled, and were genuinely nice boys (and how very unlike their father). Still, it was often remarked that the two boys could not have been more different. Where Sebastian was outgoing and charismatic, Landon was quiet and reserved. Where Sebastian was fair and handsome, Landon was dark and rather plain. Where Sebastian was excelled athletically at anything he tried the only things Landon was good at was riding and swimming.

Where Landon was of stable health, though, Sebastian was sickly. Sebastian would be well and healthy as a horse for long stretches of time and then suddenly he would fall ill for equally long stretches. When these long stretches of illness occurred Landon was banned from the sickroom for his father feared he would only excite his brother and make Sebastian worse. It was during these times that Landon learned to amuse himself by walking and exploring the countryside, reading, or simply staring outside the window or at the fire for hours on end.

Landon grew up and went to study at the University of Oxford. He studied botany and medicine in the hope that someday he might find a way to more permanently help his brother. During this time he came to visit his brother as often as he could afford to with his studies either at Pickering House, London (in his brother’s search for a bride), or Bath (in the hopes that it might cure Sebastian’s most recent illness). Though he would accompany his brother out, rarely did he take part in the activities preferring to observe those around him and to watch in awe as women flocked to Sebastian.

During his brother's last season, he seemed to be seriously considering a few young ladies (whom specifically Landon never knew) when he was suddenly taken ill and had to be whisked back home to recover. Landon, of course, after seeing his brother safely home had to return to school. It would be one of the last times he ever saw his brother. Over the next several months his brother’s condition declined rapidly until he was violently coughing up blood into his handkerchief every quarter of an hour or so. Landon, at the wishes of his brother, was never told. his last year at Oxford was cut short, however, by an urgent missive from his father, “Come home at once. Your brother is dead.” Sebastian had died of consumption.

After Sebastian’s death, Landon spent very little time around Pickering House, preferring to wander the countryside as he had done as a child or ride his horse break neck speed toward the nearest forest. He threw himself even deeper into his school work and rose in his class standing. Mentally he was dealing with his brother’s death while preparing himself for the unpleasant role that was foisted upon him. He was now the heir to the Barony.

This avoidance of his father seems to have been fortuitous, however, for even as Landon is in London searching for a bride, his father shows signs of similar symptoms to his son and it is uncertain how much longer he may or may not last.

This will be Landon's first time back into London proper since his brother's death.
