Albert Fenwick has recently been promoted from first footman to Mr Vickery's valet. While relatively young (he is a year or so younger than Mr Vickery) he has been in service for several years, and has a quick mind and keen eye, as well as a desire to rise as far as possible in service. To be butler to the future Lord Saltash (or in another such household) is, right now, the pinnacle of his ambition. He finds it hard not to engage in gossip at times, but does his best to ignore it.
