My main source is a chapter of Burney's Cecilia. Read it here: http://www.munseys.c...ceciliaburn.pdf (Look for Book Two Chapter Three.)

Some Common Costumes

Domino
This was a heavy, usually black, cloak of three-quarter length, closed up the front, with sleeves and a hood and a mask attached to the hood. For both men and women.

Van Dyke
Dressing as a Van Dyke portrait.

Sultana
Sultan's wife - something bright and oriental looking with a turban.

Brigand

Diana
Goddess of chastity

Harlequinade Characters
Harlequin: Comic servant. Carries a "slapstick" to whack people with and wears diamond chequered trousers.
Columbine: Harlequin's love interest. Servant girl with cap and apron.
Pantaloon: Buffoon, Harlequin's enemy. "Pantaloon's costume usually includes a red tight-fitting vest and breeches ensemble, slippers, a skullcap, a comically over-sized hooked nose, and a grubby grey goatee."
Pierrot: Country bumpkin servant with a whitened face. (The sentimental characterisation was later in the 19th century.) Clown

From Cecilia:

"Spaniards, chimney−sweepers, Turks, watchmen, conjurers, and old women; and the ladies, shepherdesses, orange girls, Circassians, gipseys, haymakers, and sultanas."
