Background

Fourteen years after the birth of her brother, Phoebe Sinclair was born to doting parents who thought of her arrival as a miracle. She was spoiled from the word go, always told she was beautiful, clever, and well loved. She was tutored by her governess, Miss Swenson, a young woman who appreciated the girl but also noted her faults and did her best, with a little success, to keep the girl from getting entirely out of hand. For the first thirteen years of her life she had little to worry or vex her, and spent much of her time avoiding her studies as much as she could like any mischievous and spoiled child. Her carefree childhood ended when the family estate burned down and her loving, goodhearted parents were killed. Her brother, now her rightful guardian, removed the family to London where they have resided ever since.

At thirteen years of age, in that hard place between adulthood and childhood and finding herself in a new city without the friends or familiarity of the neighbourhood she had grown up in, Phoebe retreated into her loss and became disinterested in the world around her. The charming, if spoiled, young child from her earlier years was gone and replaced with a girl who seemed altogether too willing to stay cooped up inside with books and the never ending supply a new music her brother brought to her. It took a very long time for her to finally overcome the loss of her parents, thanks to the gentle pressing of her governess and the desire to please her older brother.

At fourteen, she finally began to come back out of her shell, and re-experience the world around her, finally learning to assume the role her mother had left vacant in managing her brother's home. She learned to make new acquaintances in London and to help her brother establish and maintain family connections that she had long been neglecting. It was not an easy road for her, but at long last the girl who had existed prior to her parents' death began to shine through. Her relationship with her brother had taken on a new closeness since her parents' death and in the months that she began to re-emerge in society that bond strengthened even more. Her emotional dependence on her brother continues even to this day.

Though the family could no longer afford all new wardrobes every season or any of the other necessities that would facilitate being amongst the most fashionable groups in London, they were nevertheless capable of maintaining themselves in relative good taste, which would have much better suited their natures anyway. And despite the lack of money since the estate burned down, Phoebe still has tastes that are just a little richer than they can really afford, and her brother is so amiable that he rarely tells her no, and she often may be better dressed than he is. That is almost a necessity for her this season, however, for this is her first season being out, and her brother is as keen to find her admired as she is.
