Mrs. Whitowrth was born Miss Iris Sutton, only daughter of Colonel Michael Sutton. She made her debut when she was 17, and in her second Season met Mr Oliver Whitworth, a gentleman of respectable family and fortune, if of no great rank, and they married towards the end of the year in 1781. It was a happy marriage for both of them, though unfortunately they proved unable to have children of their own, and Iris was quite heartbroken when her husband died in 1800.
Mr Whitworth had left her well provided for, and she got along fine for several years. Then in 1806, she received news of the sudden and unexpected deaths of her young cousin, Elizabeth and her husband Richard Harcourt. Their children Amelia and James were left orphans with no family in a position to take them in and, in any case, 18-year-old Amelia stubbornly refusing to remove her young brother from their home in Hertfordshire. Iris offered to take up residence with them as Amelia's companion and as guardian of sorts.
She has resided with her cousins for the last five years, acting as something akin to aunt and advisor, and is extremely fond of both of them. Amelia's apparent willingness to sacrifice her own marital prospects for her brother concerns Iris, however, and now that James has gone up to school she has convinced Amelia to return to London for the Season and intends to do everything in her power to make her cousin a match.
