Posbrook House

Posbrook House, situated between Posbrook and Titchfield is, is the seat of the Viscountcy of Titchfield and is the home to the Reynolds family. It is currently owned by Augustus Reynolds. The land was acquired by the Reynolds family sometime in the 1590's. The estate is roughly 30 square miles and at its peak was nearly 65. It encompasses the hamlet of Little Posbrook.

History

The land that Posbrook House sits on was acquired by Sir William Reynolds in either 1592 or 1596 (records are conflicting). When it was acquired, the land was approximately 41 square miles. The land was largely in disrepair. A Normal chapel was one of the few features still in good standing. The medieval castle consisted of 2 towers and a small keep. The towers, one on the east side of the keep and the other on the south side, were connected by a wooden palisade which had either rotted away or was plundered by local village people of Little Posbrook sometime in the early 1400's. The keep and towers had fallen into disrepair by the 1440's and was in ruin by the 1470's. By 1530, the remaining structures had been pilfered for stone by locals. Sir William Reynolds had the remaining structures destroyed and built two large homes about a quarter mile from the site. The structures remained in place until the 1690's when changes began. The current structure was built, in several phases, between roughly 1705 and 1770. The land owned by the family had expanded in the same 1690's period to 63 square miles. However, family debts and financial mismanagement brought the total land owned to only 37 square miles.

Grounds and Staff

The grounds include a vast garden, forested areas, pastures, the village of Little Posbrook, and several smaller hamlets. Among the more interesting features is the Water Cascade- set of stone steps over which water flows from a set of fountains at the top. It was built in the 1690's and improved upon in recent decades.

The estate employs several gardeners, stable staff, a gamekeeper, and a full household staff.
