The Barony of Comfield is a hereditary title in the Peerage of England. The seat is Comfield Abbey in Norfolk. The current baron is Simon Wingrave. Since the death of his son, Alexander, the heir to the title is unclear - while the next cousin in line could no doubt be found, the current baron has no intention of allowing such an endeavor to become necessary.

History

The Barony of Comfield was created in October 1485 and awarded to Edward Wingrave, who had been in service to Henry VII during his exile in Brittany and acquitted himself admirably at the Battle of Bosworth Field. The title was nearly lost only a few generations later, when Thomas Wingrave, the third baron and a staunch Protestant, was executed by Mary I. His estranged wife, however, was a well-known, loyal Catholic, and she was able to preserve her son's inheritance. The current family seat of Comfield Abbey was granted to the fourth baron by Elizabeth I in 1560.
