Alfred is the second son of Thomas Sterne, the 5th Earl of Essex, by his second wife, Anne Williams. He is half-great-uncle to Jane Middleton and Thomas Sterne. He has never married and he is a retired Colonel from the Honourable Artillery Company.
Alfred is a disciplined and cunning man who enjoys strategizing on how to control people. One of his ways of manipulating others is pretending to be almost deaf, but in truth he nearly always hears whatever is said in his vicinity even without the help of his ear horn.
