Lady Caroline Harpole is the only surviving daughter of the third Duke of Leicester and his second wife, Adelaide. She is the half-sister of Lawrence, the fourth Duke and sister to Edmund and Frank Harpole.
As a child, Caroline chafed at the expectations placed on her as the only daughter of a Duke. A spirited yet naive girl, she was willingly seduced in her first season by Lord Wyck and fell pregnant. Upon discovery of her shame, Caroline was banished by her eldest brother the Duke to a distant estate in Northumberland where she gave birth to Mary Harpole and lived with her in misery and seclusion for the remaining four years of her life until she died in 1797.
