Miss Clarissa Thorne is the 18 year old daughter of Alfred Thorne. She takes after her mother, Rose Thorne, in being extremely silly and romantic. She has no useful accomplishments and spends her time devouring inappropriate novels unchecked. Admittedly, she has not managed to get through all of the novel whose titular character gave her her own name, but she does think Lovelace is a truly thrilling hero and she dreams of meeting a Lovelace of her own. She is incredibly jealous of her sister Adelaide Thorne for staying in London and hopes to write so persistently to her that she also receives an invitation. Clarissa is convinced that if she could only go to London, her natural beauty and unspoilt rustic charm will lead to her entertaining proposals from Dukes within weeks of arrival. And quite possibly discovering that she is the long lost daughter of the Earl of Morven and consequently being known forthwith as Lady Clarissa Hackett, as often happens when innocent young ladies make their way to the capital. Alternatively, Lord Morven's heir (so mysteriously returned lately from abroad!) will fall passionately in love with her and make her a Countess to lord it over her sisters back in Dorset by the end of the season. (Her two preferred scenarios are, one must hasten to reassure the reader, mutually exclusive.)
