Background

Desmond’s birth was of no particular significance to his family, as they already had succeeded in bearing an heir. His father taught him “his place” very early in life. Griffith was the important one, Griffith was the future head of the family, Griffith was to be given the attention necessary to make him into a successful man, while Desmond was left to his own devices. As soon as he learned to read and write, he learned to lie. As a child, he quickly learned to fill the void where he supposed love should go with game-playing and teasing other children. His parents took little notice, his father was too busy grooming Griffith and his mother, who already had a sickly disposition was in and out of pregnancies she didn’t desire. Desmond was shaping up to be an intelligent child - but in the worst way.

Desmond’s childhood and adolescence was marked, repeatedly, by death. Two of his brothers, Isaiah and Elias were taken swiftly by a scarlet fever epidemic that decimated Manchester, and two sisters, Charlotte and Mardling, died in infancy, or shortly thereafter. During this time, his mother quickly unraveled, thinking herself cursed and hated by God that she should outlive so many of her children, and was thrown into a deep depression, and states of “incoherency”, as his father would say, dancing around the term ‘madness’ to avoid scandal.

Desmond was never so happy than to leave home, starting his education at Eton. He proved adept enough at many subjects, taking particular interest in the subjects of law and literature, particularly drama. Desmond once breached the subject of “acting” to his father and was punished for even thinking of it. At school, Desmond was known for two things- getting into trouble and then finding and using elaborate lies and manipulation in getting out of it. Desmond is a talented fencer and could have really made something of it, had he put more effort into it beyond provoking classmates into competition. He then moved on to Cambridge and earned a degree in Classics, with a lack of anything to do with it, other than be a “well-versed” individual.

After graduation, he decided to stay in London, rather than home to Manchester to “face the wretched ones.” He enjoys what any young man of moderate wealth would- and has a penchant for gambling, boxing matches, and more drinking than befits a man of his status. He enjoys, as a “hobby”, making friends and then finding clever new ways to manipulate or destroy them, out of his own sick heart. London is Desmond’s current playground.
