The Earldom of Kirkfries is a (lapsed) title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was first awarded to Duncan McAvoy, Laird of Kirkfries, in recognition of his services to the crown in the rebellion of '45. The last Earl died without an heir, leaving a widow. According to Scottish inheritance law, she gained her husband's fortune and land which had been connected to the family without a link to the title. The title has reverted to the crown in Westminster.
