Mr. Babcott is Lord Morven's curate and resides in Lower Bramlington where he often takes services for the old vicar, now very frail, since Lord Morven rarely has need of a curate. He has few duties but he takes them very seriously. In 1809 he proposed to Adelaide Thorne and was rejected. He tried again with her sister, Ellena Thorne and was accepted. They married in 1810. He considers himself a most fortunate family man. His sermons are generally thought of as terrible but nobody has bothered to tell him this.
