Miss Jane Derby, known universally as Jenny to distinguish herself from the many other Jane Derbys in her family, is one of a prosperous doctor's many children. Brought up in York, she went to live with her grand, spinster cousin, Lady Maria Fitzgerald as a companion in 1809. It is a position that suits her for Lady Maria is active in the community and an entertaining albeit demanding companion.
