Background
Jonathon was born in Arundel Castle, the seat of Dukes of Norwich. His birth was marked with great sadness due to the death of his mother mere days after childbirth. As a child, Jonathon had a poor relationship with his father, who probably in some ways blamed him for the loss of his wife. His father was content to allow his only son to be raised by servants and governesses while he traveled around the world as an ambassador for the Crown. When Jon was five, his father (while on a voyage to China) died and Jon officially became the 13th Duke of Norwich. Jon's closest relatives (an aunt and uncle) lived across 'the pond' in the recently formed United States of American so the young lad was shipped across the sea. During his time in America, his estate was managed by overseers.
The rest of his childhood went quite well. His uncle and aunt (who were childless) loved him as their own, although they were quite common (Quakers living in Pennsylvania, they had left England to avoid religious persecution). Jon attended one of the Friends (Quaker) elementary and, then secondary schools. Although his 'new' family, as per the wishes of Jon's deceased parents, saw to it that he attended an Episcopal Church (US province of Anglicanism), he was educated in Quakerism and many of their ideas rubbed off on him. Academically, he excelled.
When he finished his secondary schooling (at the young age of 16), he attended Pennsylvania's Dickinson College and studied economics and history. After graduating at the age of 20, he taught for a couple years at the same Quaker school he had attended as a child. Although he could have stayed in America for the rest of his life (he truly enjoyed the peace, simplicity and equality of the Quakers and found his job very fulfilling), he could not escape the tentacles of his rank. The Duke's chief solicitor was sent to Pennsylvania to 'collect' the wandering Duke and bring him back to England. Although he was sad to leave his adoptive land, he was convinced by those close to him (including his adoptive guardians) that it was his responsibility to return to England.
