Background

It was an extremely cold day, but luckily not unbearable. It was December 21st of 1793; a baby girl was born in Ramsford to the long married Duke and Duchess. She was a gift, a miracle, as seven years earlier the mother had fallen off a horse. The incident had been during her pregnancy, and had killed her unborn child. The injury had also prevented her the happiness of another child, as the subsequent pregnancies had ended up with fatal outcomes for the child.

The couple's luck had finally seemed to turn around when they were told that this pregnancy would not end up with the child dead before birth. However, after her birth, when doctors checked her, her right shoulder was found to be weak. But, the happiness drowned the pain of their child having a birth defect. They named their daughter Magdalene Elizabeth Carradine.

Due to her birth defect, that was being medically treated, and due to her preciousness, Magdalene’s parents were over protective of her. She was prevented from going anywhere alone, even in the gardens of the old castle they resided in. A maid, and her governess were always with her, except at night. Her governesses taught her the art of singing, dancing, sewing, and playing the piano. Even though her education was taken care of, her real life experiences were not. Magdalene never had the freedom most noblewomen got. She had very few friends for her parents would not let her leave their sight. Magdalene was also pampered. She was given everything she asked for, and never had even tasted emotional pain.

Many years passed like this, and finally the little girl turned into a woman. Then, at a Ball, where she had gone with her family, Magdalene met a young man called Noah Walker. Mr. Walker was, as he told the Carradines, a merchant, and quite rich at that. He wished to buy a large piece of land near Ramsford. He also asked for assistance from the Duke in the matter, and thus visited Magdalene’s home often.

Magdalene’s outgoing nature made her talk to Noah often, and he seemed to enjoy her company, as well. In time, they moved from acquaintances to friends, and later lovers. It was then that Noah asked her to go to Scotland with him. The plan, or what Noah had told her, was of getting married in Scotland. After thinking for a very short period, Magdalene agreed. In the eyes of the world, Magdalene would be considered a dullard, but in her thoughts she was in love, and Noah was her God. She also knew that her father would probably object to the marriage, as Noah was nothing but a merchant, so running away to Scotland seemed the best, and only, option to the teenager.

However, due to guilt, she left a message in her brother’s room on the night she escaped. The note gave away all her plans.

On the first night of the their journey, Magdalene and Noah decided to stay in an Inn in a very small town in England. That was the first time she had been with Noah so long, and their emotions got a little out of control, ending with them sleeping together. Magdalene would have objected, but the girl thought they were soon going to be married, so what was the fault in it?

However, the next morning, when she woke up, a surprise awaited her. Magdalene noticed that all her things: the clothes, the money, and the jewelry she had brought, were gone, and so was Noah. She immediately went down to the Inn to ask about Noah, not wanting to believe that he had abandoned her, but the Inn keeper said he did not know of any Noah, and the man that had been with her had left in the morning with all the luggage. His name, the Inn Keeper said, was Rodger. It was then Magdalene realized that Noah was just a con artist and her had used her for money. Weather it was that he had the fear or being caught, or was he just bored with her, or it was his plan to leave her on the way to Scotland, Magdalene would never know.

This was the first time in her life Magdalene had been hurt so badly. The protectiveness of her parents had kept her away from such experiences. They had kept her weak.

However, luck, it seemed was with her. The moment she stepped out of the Inn, that very afternoon, trying to decide her next move, she bumped into a tall man. It was her brother, Louis, who had followed her after he had read the note, with their parents’ knowledge, of course.

He took his sister back home, to Ramsford. The news of her disappearance had been prevented from reaching the streets, luckily. The people who did notice her missing, like the maids, were told she was at her friend’s house to provide some help.

She stayed for a few weeks with her parents, who slowly taking in the situation, and realizing her grief, forgave her.

Once she was emotionally stable, Magdalene’s father sent her to London with her mother, and brother. Her widower uncle owned a house in Mayfair. The party was to stay there. Her mother wished her to be married before any news of it ever got out, and is in search of a rich man to whom she can happily give her daughter.

She had only started to believe that everything was not so bad, when her world turned over, again. Recently, Magdalene has noticed that her courses have ceased, leading her to fear that she is with child. Though she is not yet certain, with each passing day her conviction grows.
