  • Sister - Lucia Leadenhall (b. 1785) - currently aged 26, married, with two daughters (Honoria Grace and Patience Anne, aged 4 and 1)

Background

Although untitled, Mr Fotherington (senior) holds a considerable fortune and extensive estates in Dorset. His wife, daughter of an Earl, produced both heir and spare in unusually rapid succession, and the couple passed a happy and contented time together until a brief illness took Lady Sophia from the family several years ago.

Mark and Hugo passed a very average childhood, tended by nannies, then tutors, finally attending Eton and on to Oxford. Their parents were not inclined to meddle overmuch in the upbringing of their children, but were affectionate in their own ways. The boys themselves were boisterous, cheeky, and inseparable, constantly getting themselves into scrapes together. Their sister was co-opted whenever their games had need of a female character to be rescued or a monster to be vanquished, and otherwise left to her own devices, being four years younger. As they grew older, the proprietary attitude towards her (being their conveniently placed small child) matured into a very normal protective streak.

After graduating, Mark immediately became immersed in following in his father's footsteps, a life for which he was not especially inclined. As athletic as his brother and as much designed by nature to be in the open air and moving, Mark has nonetheless dutifully sat through thousands of hours of learning and duties that did not interest him, especially at first. There is some pleasure to be gotten out of things that come out right, of course, even if one does not like doing them, and he is pleased to please his father, but he has been watching his brother's career with interest since their university days and before.

Mark is honoured to have been the initiator of the match between their sister and her husband, and congratulates himself anew on every visit with them and their daughters. They have, he feels, a model marriage, and since he knows he will have to marry some day himself, he hopes that in reward for his service to his sister, God will grant him a match of equal felicity.

The boys have recently turned thirty, and over the course of this past winter Mark developed a serious illness that, though he did not find out until recovery had begun, nearly took his life. His recovery by now is well under way, and as far as he knows there remains only a few more pounds to gain and a little more energy to acquire before he shall be much as he was before.
