Background

Nancy Lawley was born on an almost unimaginably cold, wet day near the end of the year. How this came to be, she wonders about to this very day, as many people have told her that she is quite a bubbly person, though she has decided that it more than likely doesn’t really matter. Her parents, Thackery and Emily Lawley, were extremely proud, or so she is often told by them, and there fore so often believes as they say; about the fact that they had such a healthy baby girl. She also, to this day, vaguely remembers her parents telling her that she was close to being named Ariadne Isabella Lawley - she is still to this day quite glad that they decided against the first name option.

Growing up, Nan was the more sweet tempered of her parents three girls. Not that Lydia & Sarah weren’t, but their eldest daughters were also quite more outgoing, and loud. And obviously, or so most of the people say, also quite more beautiful and talented than their youngest. For the first few years this didn’t much bother Nan. But once she began to near the age where all she did was try to please people, it began to bother her. She knew that it was probably true, and that only made it worse. That’s not to say that Nan didn’t love her sisters – she did, truly. They were good friends. But, it still did get to her that people seemed to like Lydia & Sarah better than she.

Her eldest brother, Henry, as much as he did love her, was not much close to his sister. No, it was the younger son, Ichabod, who was Nan’s best friend. The boy was deaf, but this, while it may have perturbed others, didn’t bother Nan one smidge. No the whole family had grown up learning some of the sign language that he used most frequently, and he had practised reading lips. Not that it made much difference – they were closer despite the fact that he was disabled. There was just something easier to connect with there: not being understood well.

Her mother educated her and her two sisters, and much of the time she is an extremely diligent student to her mother – however, just this previous season, her father has decided that it was time that she was put out into society. The thought of that made Nan’s stomach turnover. Whether this were a good or bad feeling, she really was not sure. All she knew was that she was being put out whether or not it was good or bad, and more than likely to the exposure of many people’s criticism. What she would do, she doesn’t know, but she only can hope it will go well.
