Background

Peter Cooke was born in the usual way to two very illustrious personages, who married because they were two very illustrious personages and with very little love. He was the only child for many years, with the Marquess perfectly content that he had an heir and seeing no other reason to procreate with a woman towards whom he felt nothing. He only changed his tune when, seven years later, he was caught having an affair and conceded to give his wife more children to shut her up.

So for the first third of his life Peter was an only child, without any other children to socialize with except the children of the household staff, with whom his father disliked to see him playing. Instead, he was encouraged by his father to join him in more manly pastimes and so little Peter was dragged along on every hunting trip, fishing outing, and horseback ride that his father wanted to set out on, and was treated like quite the little man from a very young age. He didn't even have much chance to befriend his sisters until he became old enough to have his own social connections and his father began to let him be. Thus, even his relationship with his sisters couldn't forge his talents in the social realm until it was much too late. He never knew that he was missing anything as a child, but now must own that he is clearly deficient in something and feels it acutely.

Having been educated by a private tutor until the proper age, Peter later attended Winchester College and then Cambridge, studying the classics. He had never been a very devoted pupil and was not at all fond of his time at school or university, though he did at last make a few friends his own age, thanks to being absolutely forced to spend time with them. Though he abhors staying in the ton and would much prefer spending time in the country he is back in London for the social season with the rest of his family and is likely to stay for the duration, if only because he hasn't yet learned how to disobey his father.
