Rawdon Benedick Bertrand Montgomery IV, also known as Monty, is the current Earl Alderhan and the heir to the Marquessate of Eastborough. He is twenty-five years old and currently living in London.

Monty is played by Ellie.

Family

Background

Rawdon Montgomery IV, Earl of Alderhan, is - in the words of his old Eton housemaster - a rascal of the most likeable kind.

Better known as Monty to friends and family, he was born to the then Earl of Alderhan and his wife twenty five years ago, and has been raising Cain ever since. The oldest son and middle child in a loud and loving household, he has never wanted for attention or affection. His family, particularly his mother and older sister, fussed over him something dreadful as a child and it is something that is clear to all who know him. He has nothing but the deepest affection for all of his family though he often teases his younger brother Ivor who is entirely the opposite of himself, personality-wise.

Monty is handsome, clever, eligible, and well aware of all of the above. Considering that his father is in the peak of health, his main interest at the moment is simply to enjoy himself. He likes good food, good wine, and good women. He takes no shame in this, and merely sees it as an inevitable fact. He has the means for such things, and is well aware of his limits. Though he might not like to think of it too often, he is his father’s heir, and it is necessary to conduct himself as such in public. As such, he has carefully begun cultivating well esteemed connections in town.

He exudes a certain type of charisma, one that draws most everyone in to him and leaves them feeling as if they were his greatest friend. Essentially, he is an expert manipulator of people. He could never truly find it in himself to care enough to do it maliciously - not only would he see it rather a waste of his time, he hasn’t a deliberately cruel bone in his body. This does not mean, though, that he has not broken a good many hearts in his time. It is a trait shared by the rest of his family - they are all intensely confident people, who leave trails of broken hearts in their wake.

Childhood

Monty studied at Eton aged 13 through 18. An intelligent if not particularly dedicated student, he proved very suited to the dramatic arts and will often spout various quotes and stanzas seemingly thoughtlessly. It was at Eton that Monty was to meet his closest friend, Jean-Laurent d'Aubin, known to him as Jeannot. Thick as thieves, the two of them were a headache and a half for their prefect George Hackett.

The Montgomery household never seems to house fewer than two guests at any one time, and the most delightful memories of Monty's childhood are the summers he spent at Eastborough with Jeannot, and his younger sister Lunete. His mother, one of seven, found herself unable to bear children after the birth of Ivor and embraced the d'Aubin children as her own.

After finishing at Eton, rather than attending University, Monty and Jeannot decided to take a Grand Tour. In the right company, Monty will very enthusiastically retell a story from his Grand Tour, wherein he ended up in a naked fistfight with an angry husband on a balcony in the middle of the night in Greece.

Current Season

Monty has recently come to the city to assist in renovations to the town house in Mayfair. It was decided that he would remain there throughout the season, and his family would travel in as and when they felt like it, for murmurings are being made by his parents in regards to the idea of marriage. Monty has little interest in such a thing, but he cannot pretend that attending balls and making some debutantes blush does not hold any appeal.

  • Jean-Laurent d'Aubin: Two halves of a whole, 'whatever souls are made of, his and mine are the same', etc etc. Monty and Jeannot are brothers in everything except blood, thank goodness.
  • Lunete d'Aubin: Jeannot's little sister. Monty likes her very much, even when she is cruel to him. Especially when she is cruel to him.
  • Alexandra Talbot: Monty's favourite cousin, and his first guest as master of Alderhan House.
  • Adam Talbot: Monty's first cousin once removed, and the tiniest Viscount you ever did see. Monty spoils him rotten.

Friends and Acquaintances

  • Adrian Carey: A long-standing drinking partner, Monty enjoys the company of Mr Carey.
  • Blanche Carey: A long-standing dance partner, Monty enjoys the company of Miss Carey.
  • Henry Fitzroy: One of Monty’s oldest friends. Monty regards Henry with the same warm affection he reserves for his favourite cousins.
  • Eliza Fitzroy: Henry’s sister. A deeply odd girl, but again, like family.
  • Frederica Haverleigh: A thoroughly charming society hostess, Monty regards Mrs. Haverleigh with the greatest respect and a tiny bit of longing.
  • Edmund Mayoh: An odd young man, but one that Monty greatly enjoys spending time with.
  • Josephine Ruxburgh: An old family friend.
  • Clementine Worthing: Alexandra's ward for the Season, a thoroughly amiable young girl.

Flirtations

  • Yves Armistead: A flamboyant French playwright with whom Monty spent some most enjoyable evenings on his Grand Tour.
  • Lydia Armstrong: Monty escorted Mrs. Armstrong around the Ridotto at Vauxhall, where she spent the evening as the masked and mysterious Phasma"
  • Mirabelle Delafield: Monty kissed the Marchioness of Hollomere in her husband's house. This was not one of his smartest ideas.
  • Viola Fitzgerald: Even the rumours regarding her upcoming nuptials aren't enough to stop Monty flirting with Lady Viola.

Household Staff

Monty replaced most of the previous skeleton staff at Alderhan House with his handpicked favourites from Eastborough Park. They are mostly of an age with the Earl, and as such he maintains an easy relationship with them. They include:

  • Thomas Merrick: Butler, recently promoted from first footman.
  • Mary Baker: Housekeeper. Has been at Alderhan House as long as Monty can remember.
  • James Herne: Valet, recently promoted from footman. A terrible gossip.
  • Billy Smith: Footman.
  • Louis Malloy: Footman.
  • Gwen Chaplin: Head housemaid, recently promoted from housemaid.
  • Linnhe Vale: Housemaid.

Enemies

  • George Hackett: Monty and Jeannot's old prefect from their Eton days.
  • Ira Wilson: Josephine's grandson, who for some reason seems to dislike Monty and Jeannot.
