Background
Sebastian Cartwright was born in London, on 20th July 1779. It was a warm day, and having been waiting at least several weeks past her due, Sophie Cartwright, Duchess of Danston, gave birth to her first son. The Duke was happy with this, having of course wanted a son as his heir, for at least half of his considerable fortune he would inherit, as well as a courtesy title from which he could earn himself a strong place in society. So, he was bought up into wealth and privilege, and was graced with two sisters and one brother along the way. Although the Duchess wished to have more children, it was seen that she could not, as her condition had weakened after bearing her two sons and two daughters. Lady Harmony was the weakest of the children and from a young age Sebastian saw her health pale. She was a beautiful girl, but frail and weak, and was confined to the house as much as possible. Some believed her condition to be the result of walking too much in the cold and wet weather in yet her younger years (of which her mother and father tried to stop her from doing, on many occasions) and a tendency to read too late into the night.
As an observant young man, he found a love in social gatherings and events, and was held to make the best conversations. When he was twenty-three, Sebastian met Genevieve Laroque, the eldest daughter of a Marquess, and fell deeply in love. The two married, and soon secured an estate just outside of London. Genevieve announced that she was with-child, and Sebastian was quite rightly overjoyed. She did endure quite a sickness in the first few months, and rested in bed when she could, only going to town or events if she was seen to be well enough to do so. Several weeks prior to her due date, Genevieve did stay about the house more and rested in bed again. Sebastian insisted on staying with her as much as he could for the last few weeks, and wasn't seen much, even though she did try to convince him that she would be okay.
Genevieve went into labour. It was the due date that the doctor had expected, but Genevieve was becoming weak. Sebastian, on an errand to see his family in another part of London, was urgently called for, but didn't make it in time. Genevieve had died in the childbirth, but a healthy baby girl was born. In a state of deep and wild depression, Sebastian confined himself to his room, which he stayed in for many months and months. His sister Harmony and her husband Mr. Pennant, though obligated, were more than willing to take in their infant niece, and fetched for Peter, to knock some sense into Sebastian.
It had been at least eight months since Genevieve’s passing, and Sebastian’s withdrawal from his family, friends and from society caused much distress for his parents. Peter, a bold and very straightforward man, burst into Sebastian’s room and proceeded to tell him exactly how much of a coward he was being. Although Harmony would have been more delicate, being a woman of much better intuition and heartfelt knowledge, Peter did a fine job in bringing Sebastian back down to earth. Sebastian emerged firstly, back into his household and became acquainted with his daughter for the first time. Feeling terrible guilt, he had Harmony stay at his estate while he stayed with her. He also found out that Harmony had rightly named her Serena Isabelle, which Sebastian and Genevieve had discussed with the family.
Sebastian is now happy, and although he is widowed with an eight year old daughter, he finds himself happy to go back and forth within society at his own pace.
