Lawrence Harpole is the fourth Duke of Leicester and is generally known as a dull man. He enjoys hunting and shooting on his estate, takes an interest in taxidermy and is somewhat scared of his wife. Filled with a sense of his own self-importance and knowing that as Duke he can do whatever he wants, it has never occurred to him that he might be quite as tedious as he is. A selfish, foolish man.
