Background
Lucien’s entrance to this world was not what one would consider happy. When he came into the picture William and Emma’s marriage was already disintegrating very quickly and all Lucien was, was a living, breathing, piece of evidence of Emma’s infidelity with a Spanish Count. While Alexander wanted for nothing during his childhood, Lucien was expected to remain in the background, hidden, only to be acknowledged as the bastard child that he was. Now of course he was better off than those of the lower class but Lucien grew up with out a father figure in his life. Up until about age ten, Lucien was not allowed anywhere near Alexander and the man he was supposed to call father.
William tried to keep Lucien and Alexander either completely separated or locked in competition throughout most of their teenage years. And of course Alexander always won, Alexander was the first born and William’s favorite and no matter how hard Lucien tried to get that man’s love he was never good enough. So instead of being a good, obedient, second son, he was the complete opposite. He chose to be the complete opposite of Daddy’s golden boy, he was a rake and ruffian, always getting into trouble. But what he didn’t count on was Alexander always being there to bail him out. If he lost a bet, Alexander would pay it off. If he got into a fight Alexander was there to back him up. Alexander couldn’t actually acknowledge the fact that he loved his brother until his father died or it would have been a complete betrayal.
When Alexander became the ninth Earl of Cumberland, Lucien’s life changed drastically. No longer was he invisible, no longer was he a disappointment. Alexander accepted him completely and unconditionally, even using portions of the Knight family fortune to finance Lucien’s business ventures. For the past eight years Lucien has been part of a close knit, loving clan and Alexander’s second in command.
