Elizabeth Vickery was the second wife of William Vickery, the second Viscount Saltash. On her marriage, she became stepmother to Laura, then aged six, and Edward, aged 8. She bore her husband a further three children, two sons and a daughter, and readily stepped into the place of her stepchildren's deceased mother. A forthright, no-nonsense woman, she instilled a firm sense of duty into her children (actual and adopted).

Her husband and stepson died within two years of each other, and her son stepped into the role of Viscount a little unwillingly, but with his mother's full support.

Upon the birth of her first grandchild, a son, Elizabeth felt her duty done and retired to Bath, both for its society and for the curative powers of the waters there, dying there in 1802, having seen the births of seven grandchildren and knowing that Robert was growing up fitted in every way to become as fine a Viscount as his grandfather and father, when his time eventually came to step into the role.
