Marietta Lovejoy, Lady Finchingfield, is the third wife of John Lovejoy, the seventy-six-year-old Baron of Finchingfield, a long-standing friend of her father's. She is a played character created by Ellie and played by Liz.
She had hoped to marry better, indeed her mother had assured her that with looks like hers she could well be a duchess. However, due to overwhelming pride and foolish shortsightedness, Marietta turned down imminently more suitable men than her eventual husband. The baron's first wife had provided him with a daughter and a son, his second with no children at all, and his son was so sickly that Lord Finchingfield was sure that he required a spare. An arrangement was settled with Mr. Thraxton in 1805, and Marietta became Baroness Finchingfield, dutifully providing him with one son and no more. She is patiently waiting for her husband to die, and has been some six years ever since a stroke left him largely incapacitated, so that she might begin to live the life she had hoped for and believes she deserves.
Marietta was educated at Miss Pirbright's. She is part of a group that calls themselves the Bluebirds. Other group members include (but are not limited to) Frances Howard, Liselle Peltenham, Lettice Haywood, Eugenia Burnett and Virginia Lang. She is closest to Lady Frances -- insofar as anyone can say they are close to Lady Frances.
