Miss Mary Harpole is the illegitimate daughter of Lady Caroline Harpole and Lord Wyck. Until her mother's death in 1797 when she was four years old, Mary was brought up in a cottage on an estate in Northumberland. After this, she was brought to live with her aunt, Lady Edmund Harpole, who claimed her as a distant orphaned cousin from a lesser branch of the family. When she was twelve, she was sent to Miss Pirbright's Select Seminary for Young Ladies near Bath, where she remained until an outbreak of diphtheria closed the school in April 1811.
Although Mary knows that she is in fact Lady Caroline's daughter and not a poor cousin at all, she does not know the identity of her father. In fact, nobody does, though the family suspects that it is Lord Wyck.
Mary is is played by Meg.
