Casta Scott is the illegitimate daughter of Catherine, Countess of Kirkfries and a soldier she had a brief affair with in Edinburgh in the summer of 1801. She was born at Kirkfries Castle and immediately adopted by John and Ellen Scott, a kindly couple from the local village. Ellen had recently given birth to a daughter, Jeannie, so acted as wetnurse to the girl, whom she passed off as the orphaned daughter of a late brother in Glasgow.
Casta grew up with her three foster siblings, whom she knew as cousins, Douglas, Jeannie and Hamish. She has been treated kindly and as one of the family but nevertheless has always felt something of an outsider, guilty for taking up space and food that should belong to her cousins. The fact that Lady Kirkfries has on the occasions she has visited the village shown her some marks of favour for "being a pretty child who knows her Bible" has further served to make her feel an outsider, even if this has occasioned nothing more than good-humoured ragging by her cousins.
Casta is an obedient, helpful little girl with a sweet nature, if rather anxious, and a great desire to please who does indeed know her Bible, even if she has not yet been taught how to read. She speaks with the dialect and accent of her fellow Scots and is beginning to show herself to be a resourceful seamstress.
