Rotherham Park is the principal seat of the Earls of Rotherham and is currently inhabited by the 8th Earl, Richard Fitzgerald and his family.
The current house was built by the seventh Earl of Rotherham in the 1740s following his return from the Grand Tour in which he also collected an impressive number of Old Masters and classical statues.
Following the the Earl's second marriage to Miss Derby in 1758, he undertook the improvement of the estate in the latest style, employing Capability Brown to bring the the landscape up to the expectations of the latest romantic fashions. The new Countess was particularly fond of gardens and it was under guidance that the new rose garden and Lady Rotherham's Walk were created.
The house is about six miles from the market town of Rotherham, which is owned by the family. The estate also borders Applebrook, home of Sir William Devenish. The current Lord Rotherham is responsible for the purchase of several acres of land from Sir William to help him through a period of recent financial difficulties.
