Richard Fitzgerald is the eighth and current Earl of Rotherham. He married Miss Madeleine Freye, grand-daughter of the Earl of Bridgeton in 1776. He divides his time between his estate at Rotherham in Yorkshire and London, where he is a Tory member of the House of Lords.

Lord Rotherham rules his estates and his family with justice, tolerance and good sense. He is a fair landowner, family man and friend. Most recently he has been instrumental in helping his Yorkshire neighbours, the Devenishes after they were left greatly indebted when Sir John Devenish died. He paid off some of the debts, advised Sir William Devenish on how to run the estate profitably, and set aside a living at the Surrey estate in Cheshire for his younger brother Charlie.
