Schooling and Future

Having been taught the basics of the three Rs by a governess employed by his father, William continued studying under a tutor and is now a bright student at Winchester, where he does well in his studies. He will be turning 16 in the near future, which is a crucial decision time - he can leave school and go into a profession, as a lawyer's clerk or banker's clerk or similar, or remain at school to go on to university with a view to becoming a lawyer himself, or entering the church; there is a suitable living in his uncle's gift and his older cousin John seems content with his own choice of profession, so he is not wholly against the idea of joining the army.
