History
An attack of scarlet fever when she was thirteen resulted in Margaret losing her hearing and most of her ability to speak - nevertheless, this did little to affect her good humour and kindness. Her father, a wealthy baronet, sent her to Edinburgh to be educated by Mr. Thomas Braidwood, the first educator of the Deaf in Great Britain. She remained there for four years, whereupon she returned to her home in Oakham with her speech mostly recovered and an ability to lip-read and finger-spell. This was obviously the way that people preferred for her to communicate, but she also returned with a good working knowledge of Mr. Braidwood's own combined system of speech and signing.
Margaret was a close childhood friend of Sophie Walsom, the pair growing up on estates less than half a mile from each other. They were brought out in London at the same time in 1782, during which time Margaret was introduced Lucian Fitzroy, the Baron of Silchester and a great friend of Rawdon Montgomery III (who was at that time attempting to court Miss Walsom, to varying degrees of success). Unbeknownst to Margaret, the baron was quite taken with her upon their meeting. He did not appear to demonstrate this in any of their further meetings, though Sophie kept insisting that he liked her very much. However, she was disabused of this notion when, to her shock and delight, Baron Silchester greeted her at Almack's with gestures taken from the Braidwoodian combined system. He proposed to her several weeks later, and she very happily accepted.
