Richard Fitzgerald is the eldest son and heir to the Earldom of Rotherham and holder of the courtesy title of Viscount Surrey. He lives at Surrey Lodge in Cheshire with his wife, Cordelia and three children, Henry, Madeleine and baby Mortimer.
As the eldest son, Richard has always felt the pressures of duty. He takes his inheritance seriously and has often felt that he is the only one in the family to do so, though that is not really true. After suffering a romantic disappointment, he married advantageously to Lady Cordelia Blakeney in 1801. The prim and proper Cordelia was not a popular choice with the rest of his family and exacerbated the difference in values between them. While relations are perfectly cordial particularly between the children and their aunts and uncle and Lady Rotherham has gone out of her way to be kind to Lady Surrey, whose own parents are dead, there is nevertheless something of a distance between Richard's family and the rest of his immediate family.
