Sir John Devenish (1761-1807), baronet, was the owner of Applebrook in Yorkshire. He married Miss Fanny Wilson, daughter of a local attorney in 1786 with whom he had two children: William (the current baronet) and Charlie.

Sir John was addicted to gambling and drink. He got severely in debt, was obliged to sell some of his estate to his neighbour, Lord Rotherham and finally died in a drunken brawl in a local tavern in 1807.
