Miss Veronique Abberton is the illegitimate daughter of Godrey, Earl of Mersea and Giselle Fortier, a Parisian seamstress. She is the twin brother of Xavier Abberton and also is the half-sister of Leo Abberton (the current Earl) as well as of Harold, Lucas, Charlotte, Augustus, and Helen.
Veronique was brought to England on the death of her mother in 1792 alongwith Xavier. They were given the Abberton name and brought up alongside their Abberton siblings, but never equally. While Veronique shared Charlotte and Helen's governess and was given some privileges, she has no dowry to speak of and has made no debut. She now lives with her brother in London and financial constraints mean she is contemplating having to find some form of employment, perhaps as a governess. She resents her low social status compared to her siblings.
