Background
Alexandra was born the third of four children, between two rowdy brothers and a cosseted younger sister. Her childhood was happy but rather confined; an attack of scarlet fever before Alex was born had left her mother with a scarred face and an unwillingness to go about in public unless strictly necessary. With her father often away and her brothers at boarding school, Alex and Henrietta were left to the instruction of a governess. Besides the rudiments of history and geography, Alex speaks French well and with a good accent. Dancing was never her strong suit, but she does not disgrace herself playing the piano. Most of all she liked to draw, and would spend hours sketching portraits and sculptures from around the house, the female subjects in particular.
Alexandra debuted at eighteen and promptly married an acquaintance of her father’s, a viscount rather older than herself. Never having come close to being in love with anyone, she was very content in theory with wealth and a title, whatever the personal defects of the gentleman in question may be. However, married life in practice turned out to be rather tedious. Alex’s husband was not a cruel man but not pleasant to live with, and she was hardly sorry at being left an independent woman of means after his death the previous year. On the contrary, Alex is delighted with her new situation. If it were required financially she would remarry tomorrow; as it is, her situation leaves her free to act as she wishes. She is very fond of her son Adam, but considers seven years of wedded bliss to be enough for a lifetime.
This Season, Alexandra is residing with her cousin Monty at the Montgomery’s London home in Mayfair, whilst she chaperones the debuting daughter of a friend too far into pregnancy to find London enjoyable. She thoroughly intends to have her married by the end of the season.
